Garden Makeover at PEP

Feb 02 2017
Community GardenNeighbourhood GroupWeekend Resource

PEP’s sensory garden at the rear of the office has always been a favourite spot for people to sit out at and enjoy the famous elusive Scottish sun. But over the years the garden has become more and more wild, with large plants taking over and ivy covering half of the area!

We were delighted then that the PEP Neighbourhood group’s continued working partnership with ‘Edinburgh Lothian Greenspace Trust’ has culminated in the Trust providing funding for the garden to have a complete makeover.

The Trust employed contractors to come in and completely redesign the space, with input from PEP service users, volunteers and staff. The three contractors wasted no time in getting to work and digging out all the old established plants and readying the ground. New steps were built with a path to access the upper levels of the gardens and fabulous planters have been created from old tyres; not only for recycling, but also to enable people with all abilities to get involved in gardening.

The team even created a foldaway work table meaning that potting can be done by the group on site and then be cleared away to make the most of the space. The side garden has also been cleared with a path created to what will be PEP’s soft fruit area.

Whilst there is still a lot of work to do, with the contractors coming back in a few weeks to continue their amazing work, the garden is already vastly different with more light and more space for gardening. Once the work is completed the Neighbourhood group will set to work to plant up the garden once again with the help of Edinburgh Lothian Greenspace Trust and the Weekend Resource will be decorating the planters to bring more colours into the space.

(Have no fear; the removed plants will all be rehomed over at the community garden!!)

Today PEP were delighted to welcome Sue and Eileen from the Hibernian Football club … and even more delighted to welcome the famous Scottish Cup. May 2016 saw Hibs win the cup after 114 years and Sue, Hibs Community Engagement Officer, and volunteer Eileen have been on the road ever since bringing the cup into the community. Tomorrow they will have visited 114 schools across the whole of Scotland; one for each year!

Everyone at PEP would like to thank them for the fantastic chance to get up close and have their pictures taken with the trophy.

Neighbourhood Group News Round Up

Neighbourhood GroupChristmas

The last part of 2016 was a busy time for the neighbourhood group. Not only were they getting ready for the Christmas celebrations and Pantomime; but during October and November they were also making bird boxes!

The bird boxes were made by the group to be part of an interactive light project that took place at Muirhouse Shopping Centre on the 25th of November. The group worked on this project with Lyndsay from ‘The Arcadeum Art Shop.’ The boxes themselves can still be seen inside the Muirhouse Shopping Centre where they will shortly being going up for auction with the proceeds to go to a local charity.

On the 13th of December the neighbourhood group also created Christmas wreathes when they visited Newhailes National Trust for Scotland. The used materials sourced directly from the Newhailes woodland along with donated cinnamon and dried fruits to create beautiful festive decorations.

Neighbourhood Group Autumn Walk

Nov 15 2016
Neighbourhood Group

The Tuesday Neighbourhood Group took advantage of the beautiful November weather to go for a nature walk at the Cammo Estate.

As the group stretched their legs, they also stretched their brains, identifying and discussing trees.

A handy log next to the old Cammo house ruin gave a good spot to stop for lunch and a bit of leaf sketching before heading for home.

All the sketches and chalk drawings were then put together and the group collectively created a lovely leaf collage currently on display at PEP’s offices.

The Neighbourhood Group had a fun afternoon of word and memory games, proving that learning can be fun!

The words were very much a joint effort, but it was Peter who proved to be the ‘Memory Master’!

Inveresk Sunshine

May 13 2016
Neighbourhood Group

On Wednesday the Neighbourhood Group made the most of the sunshine with a trip to Inveresk Gardens. This hidden gem was wonderfully sheltered and the group enjoyed wandering around admiring the flowers. They even did some wildlife spotting! There was a rabbit and a couple of toads (if you knew where to look!).

The packed lunch was enjoyed in the restored Edwardian conservatory before the group sat on the grass for a little art session. They drew the house, tulips and scenery; there was even a rabbit picture and a couple of portraits.

It was a great day out in a beautiful setting with fantastic weather. However, Kristy was unfortunate enough to find the one muddy patch in the whole place! Oops!

Easter Revels at PEP

Mar 29 2016
LiteracyNeighbourhood Group

The Tuesday groups got into the spirit of Easter with lots of ‘Eggciting’ tasks.

The literacy and numeracy group set to measuring and weighing an assortment of chocolate eggs kindly donated by Morrison’s on Ferry Road. They checked out the best by dates and had a good discussion on prices and value for money… before eating them of course.

The Neighbourhood group played games with Frances and enjoyed a delicious chocolate egg shared between them. Though there had to be a play-off after Frances suspiciously won the first game! Well done to Diane who won the second round and received a lovely giant Crème Egg.

The Weekend Resource also created these beautiful Easter decorations using just wool, paste and some balloons! Well done to them all and Happy Easter

Neighbourhood Group

PEP is delighted to announce that the Neighbourhood Group has received Grant Funding from the Morrison’s Foundation for the generous amount of £1642!

This funding will be used to create a programme of activities for the group over the coming months.

We cannot thank the Morrison’s Foundation enough for their generosity.

Farewell to Tasha

VolunteersNeighbourhood Group

Natasha Ong came to PEP back in September 2014 as a student on a gap year placement. Whilst here she helped with every aspect of PEP’s service delivery; she volunteered as a reading buddy with the Tuesday literacy group, she assisted in delivering a class on healthy eating for the Neighbourhood group, and as a passenger escort with bus runs. At Christmas she made PEP’s panto extra special with her Grade 8 piano playing!

Once her placement ended she came back as a volunteer and continued to help with the neighbourhood group. But finally her year had to end so she could go back to her final year of her Psychology degree at the University of Middlesex.

We would like to thank Tasha for all her hard work and continued dedication to PEP and wish her the best of luck for the remainder of her studies.

Neighbourhood Summer Programme Starts

Jupitar Artland 07/7/15

The Neighbourhood Group’s first summer outing was at Jupiter Artland, based at Wilkieston.

The space itself has formal gardens, fields and woodlands surrounding the historic Bonnington House and Manor.   There are various walks that the group participated in with many artworks and sculptures along the way.  The group had a good day and enjoyed seeing the art.

The staff were very helpful and set up a marquee for us to have our lunch in which was lovely!

Dynamic Earth 9/7/15

The Neighbourhood Group went on their 2nd trip to Dynamic Earth as part of their summer programme.  The staff at Dynamic Earth were fantastic and arranged the entire day for the group.

We firstly started with a tour which included being on a time machine which was very exciting!  We then went to see an Astronaut film in the 360 degree showdome, with explosive surround sound! It was an experience for sure.

We then went onto two workshops, firstly, a dinosaur exercise where there were dinosaur fossils and the group then went onto make clay dinosaurs, great fun!

The last part of the day was a workshop about Weather, which involved electricity experiments and tornado experiments.

The group had a fantastic day and would love to go back again the future.
