Summer Programme

During the second week, PEP’s buses travelled to Falkirk, across Edinburgh’s Old Town, and on to the Ratho Barge.

The week started at Falkirk, where the weather was dull and overcast. However, everyone enjoyed the shopping experience at the Howgate Shopping Centre. Despite the weather, a few brave souls ventured out to the wee lanes nearby and the pound shops benefitted with a sudden sale of brolly’s when the heavens opened.

On Thursday; tour guide Richard took 12 lucky people (and driver Darin) on a tour of the old town. This year his subject was Edinburgh’s grisly past with talk of Burke and Hare, a visit to Greyfriar’s Church and the Grassmarket, and stories of Deacon Brodie. As always it was informative and enjoyable, and this time the weather meant that everyone could stretch their legs off the bus without fear of rain.

The final trip of the week was to the barge at Ratho run by the Seagull Trust. The 2 barges travelled leisurely up to Almond Dell before stopping and tying together. This meant packed lunch time and gave Moira the opportunity to check out how everyone was on the second Barge. The relaxing trip back down the canal to the waiting buses was enjoyed by everyone. We would like to thank everyone at the Seagull Trust for their help and hospitality for the day.

Blair Drummond Safari Park

PEP’s second trip was to the Blair Drummond Safari Park near Stirling. The trip was as popular as ever with 2 buses being driven this time by Jumbo and Theodora.
Unfortunately the weather wasn’t as nice as it had been for the start of the week, but that didn’t stop anyone from enjoying themselves and there were still plenty of animals to see.

The trip started with a tour around the animal enclosures before lunch under cover at the events tent. There were then options to go to the petting zoo, view the meerkats and do a bit of shopping in the gift shop. Quite a few people also opted to go to the wonderful sea lion show. The day ended with another trip around the animal reserves before the buses headed for home.

Our thanks to the Safari Park staff who let us use their events tent for a lovely dry packed lunch!

Summer ProgrammeNeighbourhood Group

Jupitar Artland 07/7/15

The Neighbourhood Group’s first summer outing was at Jupiter Artland, based at Wilkieston.

The space itself has formal gardens, fields and woodlands surrounding the historic Bonnington House and Manor.   There are various walks that the group participated in with many artworks and sculptures along the way.  The group had a good day and enjoyed seeing the art.

The staff were very helpful and set up a marquee for us to have our lunch in which was lovely!

Dynamic Earth 9/7/15

The Neighbourhood Group went on their 2nd trip to Dynamic Earth as part of their summer programme.  The staff at Dynamic Earth were fantastic and arranged the entire day for the group.

We firstly started with a tour which included being on a time machine which was very exciting!  We then went to see an Astronaut film in the 360 degree showdome, with explosive surround sound! It was an experience for sure.

We then went onto two workshops, firstly, a dinosaur exercise where there were dinosaur fossils and the group then went onto make clay dinosaurs, great fun!

The last part of the day was a workshop about Weather, which involved electricity experiments and tornado experiments.

The group had a fantastic day and would love to go back again the future.

North Berwick

As the sun shone for the PEP trip to North Berwick, our drivers Mary and Grant made the most of the good weather by taking the scenic route through Longniddry, Aberlady and Gullane. Once in North Berwick town centre we alighted the bus and quickly found a lovely manicured park area where we all sat in the sun and ate our picnic lunches.

After lunch everyone set off to make the most of the afternoon, some went souvenir shopping, a few headed off to a famous butchers shop and others just found a coffee shop and sat and chatted in the sunshine. Everyone enjoyed the day and our thanks go to drivers Mary and Grant who returned us all safely home.
